Notable China news from around the web.

WORTH THINKING ABOUT

Pieces of news or analysis that caught our eye:

Hikvision boxed out in Brazil: The Chinese surveillance technology company has lost a legal battle with Brazillian SOE Infraero to participate in a bidding process for a project at Congonhas Airport, the second-busiest airport in the country. Instead, a โ€œBosch / Genetec / Dell solutionโ€ is being installed. The research consultancy IPVM has a write-upย on the case, with this conclusion:

PRC government entities only have a 41% interest in Hikvision, thus Infraero’s statement confirms that Hikvision was unwilling, or unable to produce the required declaration guaranteeing the confidentiality of data recorded by its camerasโ€ฆ

Despite having a production center in Manaus and courting local politicians, Hikvision continues to have challenges competing at the highest, enterprise level of Brazilian video surveillance.

Similar to the U.S. NDAA, in Brazil, as is the case in Chile, cybersecurity and perceived vulnerabilities with Hikvision’s technology dissuade would-be end-users from deploying the PRC-controlled manufacturer’s solutions.

While Hikvision has benefited immensely from its PRC government ownership, it is also increasingly facing challenges, viewed not as a private-sector security manufacturer, but as an arm of the PRC government.

Vaccine emergency authorization:ย โ€œChinaโ€™s rush has bewildered global experts,โ€ Sui-Lee Wee writes at the New York Times.

No other country has injected people with unproven vaccines outside the usual drug trial process to such a huge scaleโ€ฆ

The unproven vaccines could have harmful side effectsโ€ฆ

The wide use of vaccines also raises issues of consent, especially for employees of Chinese vaccine makers and state-owned companies who might feel pressure to roll up their sleeves. The companies have asked people taking the vaccines to sign a nondisclosure agreement preventing them from talking about it to the news media.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, at least 350,000 peopleย have been vaccinated in China outside of clinical trials.
