Notable China news from around the web.

WORTH THINKING ABOUT

Pieces of news or analysis that caught our eye:

How should we talk about carbon emissions?ย David Bandurski at the China Media Project notes that Chinese state media, in the wake of Xi Jinpingโ€™s pledge to reach carbon neutrality by 2060ย and ensuing criticism from the U.S., has taken to citing โ€œcumulative CO2 emissions, a measure that accounts for emissions going back to 1750 and the start of the industrial revolution.โ€

Of course, using that measure does in fact reveal that the U.S. has released more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than any other country, but it obscures the fact that both the U.S. and China remain far and away the heaviest polluters in the world, with China having contributed most to recent emissions. Bandurski concludes that โ€œtheย insults and empty promises volleying back and forth between the leaders of the two countries at the moment are wasted words at a time when real action is more urgent than ever.โ€
