Unclear who would help Taiwan in a war: foreign minister
Taiwan's foreign minister says he doesn't know what countries might help it in the event of a war with China. Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory, to brought under its control by force if necessary, and concerns are rising about a possible armed conflict. In an interview with Sky News Australia, Joseph Wu says Taiwan has to defend itself and is not asking other countries to fight for it. U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly said American forces would help defend Taiwan, although U.S. official policy remains ambiguous over if and how forces would be dispatched. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles has said his country had made no promises regarding any future conflict over Taiwan.

Hong Kong to slash elected seats in setback to democracy
Hong Kong’s leader has unveiled plans to eliminate most directly elected seats on local district councils, the last major political representative bodies chosen by the public. The planned electoral changes are widely seen as part of Beijing’s increasing control over the former British colony, which was promised autonomy when it returned to China in 1997. Chief Executive John Lee says the overhaul will reduce the proportion of directly elected seats in the municipal-level organization to about 20% from some 90% currently. Two years ago, Hong Kong already amended its electoral laws for its legislature, drastically reducing the public’s ability to vote and increasing the number of pro-Beijing lawmakers making decisions for the city.
