Migrant Worker’s Contact Tracing Info Moves Chinese Masses

A tale of two Beijings: “The story of a fisherman who came to Beijing searching for his missing son and tested positive for COVID-19 while working odd jobs to support his family has touched millions of Chinese social media users,” Sixth Tone reports. The case sparked conversations about inequality, as the contact tracing information released about the man, a migrant worker, contrasted sharply with another of the capital’s recently COVID-positive denizens, who made multiple trips to high-end shopping malls before coming down with Omicron. See also in Bloomberg: Lifestyles of two COVID patients highlight wealth chasm in China.

Security scanners across Europe tied to China govt, military

One Chinese firm makes many of Europe’s security scanners: Nuctech, a Chinese security inspection products firm partially owned by the state, has had many of its security scanners installed across key points in Europe, raising alarm over national security and China’s potential access to sensitive data, the Associated Press reports. Nuctech has been “frozen out of the U.S. for years due to national security concerns,” but its devices have been installed by 26 out of 27 EU member states, according to records reviewed by AP.

Despite High Stakes in Ethiopia, China Sits on the Sidelines of Peace Efforts

Since November of 2020, Ethiopia has been suffering from a deadly internal conflict that has claimed an estimated 50,000 lives and displaced over two million. The United States, the African Union and others in the region have attempted to secure a cease-fire between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) but have made little headway. In contrast, China has remained mainly on the sidelines of peacebuilding efforts even though Ethiopia — the second most populous country in Africa — is a centerpiece of its Africa policy.

China's Games app has security flaws, researchers say

The coming Olympic data leak? A “simple but devastating” privacy flaw has been found in MY2022, the health tracking and communications app that Beijing has mandated all attendees of the Winter Olympics download. “Researchers with Toronto’s Citizen Lab project said MY2022 failed to properly encrypt the transfer of personal data, leaving it vulnerable to hackers,” Reuters reports.

Citizen Lab “said it had informed the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee on December 3 of its security concerns but had not received any response.” A group of delegations, including Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Canada, are advising their athletes to “keep their devices off Wi-Fi networks and use burner phones.”

Hong Kong’s ‘Draconian’ Travel Curbs Are Top AmCham Concern

Foreign executives are leaving Hong Kong as the city continues its strict “COVID-zero” measures. “Hong Kong’s stringent travel restrictions are now the biggest challenge for American businesses and expatriates in the city, with 44% of respondents in a new survey [by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong] saying they’re likely to leave,” Bloomberg reported last week. The Wall Street Journal has a new report on the situation, noting that the International Monetary Fund “estimated that the city’s rebounding economy could suffer [if strict COVID containment measures continue], with growth slowing to 3% this year, down from last year’s 6.4%.”

    Access digital yuan

China’s digital yuan wallet now has 260 million individual users

Has one-fifth of China actually downloaded the digital yuan app? That’s what People’s Bank of China financial markets head Zōu Lán 邹澜 indicated when he said that 261 million individual users have downloaded the e-CNY wallets so far, conjuring up 87.5 billion yuan ($13.78 billion) worth of transactions. However, if that statistic is accurate, then about half of those app users may not find much use for it, because the digital yuan trial cities only have a collective population of about 136 million.

Cross-country Exposure: Analysis of the MY2022 Olympics App - The Citizen Lab

MY2022, an app mandated for use by all attendees of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, has a simple but devastating flaw where encryption protecting users’ voice audio and file transfers can be trivially sidestepped. Health customs forms which transmit passport details, demographic information, and medical and travel history are also vulnerable. Server responses can also be spoofed, allowing an attacker to display fake instructions to users.
