Trump-China roundup: Anbang Insurance, Jack Ma, and talk of war

Monday: A New York Times story was released over the weekend documenting the dealings of Jared Kushner, Donald Trumpโ€™s son-in-law, with the shadowy Anbang Insurance Group in China.

Tuesday: The president-elect met with Alibaba executive Jack Ma, who vowed that his company would create 1 million new jobs in the U.S.

Wednesday: Trumpโ€™s 45 pending trademark applications in China โ€œrisk a constitutional crisis,โ€ according to prominent ethics experts. Also noted: Beijing is willing to arrange meetings with Trumpโ€™s team at the World Economic Forum later this month.

Thursday: Rex Tillerson, Trumpโ€™s nominee for U.S. secretary of state, attracted criticism from Chinese state media for his remarks on the South China Sea. Also noted: reactions from Chinese social media to Trumpโ€™s first press conference since the election.

Friday: Beijingโ€™s backlash to Rex Tillerson’s comments continued. An editorial in the state-run Global Times belittled Tillersonโ€™s suggestion to cut off Chinaโ€™s access to islands it claims in the South China Sea. The China Daily warned of a โ€œdevastating confrontationโ€ if Tillerson carries through on his promises.
