Donald Trump was today once again a popular topic on Chinese social media for several reasons. First, he broke a long-standing American presidential tradition by not sending Spring Festival greetings to Chinese people. One internet user ridiculed Trump, sayingย (in Chinese), โ€œGiven his intellectual level, he might not know when Chinese New Year is.โ€ Another subject of discussion was about a group of Chinese companies that rentedย a large digital billboard in New Yorkโ€™s Times Square to wish Trump and the American people a โ€œhappy Chinese New Year,โ€ which one commenter describedย (in Chinese) as โ€œrendering good for evil.โ€ Chinese social media also lit up today over Ivanka Trumpโ€™s appearanceย at the Chinese Embassyโ€™s New Yearโ€™s party and her recently posted videoย of her daughter singing a song in Mandarin. One of the most upvoted comments below the video readsย (in Chinese), โ€œIt seems the only person in Trumpโ€™s family who knows nothing about politics and diplomacy is the president himself.โ€
In other Trump news, the presidentโ€™s รฉminence grise Steve Bannon was the subject of media reportsย that quote recent radio shows he did for Breitbartย in which he said, โ€œWeโ€™re going to war in the South China Sea in five to 10 years.โ€
