Amazon sells cloud unit to meet Chinese cybersecurity regulations

Reutersย reportsย that Sinnet, Amazonโ€™s China partner, will โ€œbuy the U.S. firmโ€™s Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud computing unit in China for up to 2 billion yuan ($301.2 million).โ€

  • In reaction to some media coverageย of the move, Amazonโ€™s chief technology officer tweetedย that reports that AWS โ€œis exiting its China business are completely wrong,โ€ and that the company โ€œremains committed to provide its service in China.โ€
  • A spokespersonย from AWS said that the company โ€œsold certain physical infrastructure assets to Sinnetโ€ in order to comply with Chinese law.
  • Cloud services must store all data on servers located in Chinaย โ€” where the authorities have the right to access it โ€” to meet the countryโ€™s tough cybersecurity regulations. Amazon needed to sell off its AWS unit to meet this requirement.
  • China Cyberspace Administrationย (CAC) and other regulators have sustained their tough approach over the past few years. American tech companies such as Apple and Amazon have had to remove VPN appsย and media apps not registered in China, among many other concessions.

If you want to play in Chinaโ€™s tech world, you play by Beijingโ€™s rules.
