Japanese anime studio behind smash hit ‘Your Name’ sets its new film in mainland China

Following Your Name, the 2016 global blockbuster that is currently the highest-grossing anime film of all time, CoMix Wave Films, the Tokyo-based anime production studio behind the smash hit, announced its new anthology anime film, Shikioriori, on Monday, February 26. It consists of short stories set in three Chinese cities — Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
Based on the film’s teaser site, Shikioriori is produced in partnership with a Shanghai-based company called Haoliners Animation League, which, according to Crunchyroll, now produces almost half of China’s domestic animation since its establishment in 2013.
Unlike the Japanese studio’s previous works, which were mostly directed by Makoto Shinkai, Shikioriori seems to have no relation to the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker. Instead, Li Haoling 李豪凌, the founder of Haoliners, serves as the general director and is responsible for “Shanghai Love,” the story set in Shanghai. The other two, “Sunny Breakfast” and “A Small Fashion Show,” are directed by Chinese comedian Yi Zhenxing 易振兴 and Japanese anime director Yoshitaka Takeuch, respectively.
