China warns Taiwan and the U.S. with live-fire drills

On April 18, China conducted live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait. It was the first time that the Chinese navy has held exercises with live ammunition since 2015.

Tension has been escalating between mainland China and Taiwan. In March, the U.S. angered Beijing by signing the Taiwan Travel Act, which encourages โ€œvisits between officials of the United States and Taiwan at all levels.โ€

In response, General Secretary Xi Jinping reiterated his warnings of the โ€œpunishment of historyโ€ for any attempt at Taiwanese separatism.

Last week, Xi presided over a massive show of force in the South China Sea conducted by the Chinese navy.
