Team China debuts at Gay Games in Paris
On August 4, 87 Chinese participants, including Chinese residing abroad, joined a parade of athletes and supporters at the Jean-Bouin stadium in Paris to mark the opening of the 10th international Gay Games, a one-week sporting event modeled after the Olympics dedicated to raising awareness of gay and transgender rights.
More than 15,000 participants from over 70 countries are expected to compete in 36 sporting disciplines. Among them, team China, comprising 87 individuals who are competing without official recognition from the Chinese government, is set to take part in games including basketball, tennis, swimming, and track.
The first Gay Games were held in San Francisco back in 1982. As a worldwide sporting and cultural event, it is open to people from all backgrounds, ages, genders, and sexual orientations.
Hong Kong is the host city for the next Gay Games in 2022.
