Announcing: The China Project Photo Contest Winners

We’ve selected the winners of our first (maybe annual?) Photo Contest, and trust us, it was not easy. We received more than 100 photos from people based in China and abroad, capturing a diversity of scenes representing only the smallest — but absolutely most worthwhile — glimpses of this immense, multifaceted, fascinating, and sometimes indescribable country.

We asked for stories, and we got them: children sprinting toward temples, families in private moments, clouds settling upon rock formations, traditions of those on the periphery (we were impressed by the number of photos we received from Xinjiang — Kashgar, specifically — and Tibet), everyday people snagged — via a shutter click — amidst movement.

It’s with sincere regret that we could only select 10 winners. We’ll begin posting them today: one photo per day until we unveil the Grand Prize winner on Friday, September 21.

This week will be devoted to the 2nd prize winners, which will take us from the plateaus of Qinghai to the shadows of Beijing to the snaking roads of Tianmen Mountain. You’ll want to keep an eye on this space. This post will also be updated, below, with winner names and links to their work. In the near future, we’ll also post several honorable mentions in our Photo of the Day section, which also appears in our daily newsletter.
