Kuora: Here are some of my kids’ drawings. Happy holidays, everyone

Dragon, Johnny age 8, pastel and ink

Just in time for the holidays, it’s all about family in this week’s column,ย originally posted to Quora on May 13, 2015.

What kinds of art projects do young children (preschool thru elementary school) work on at school where you grew up or where you live today?

Beijing, China here, with a 5th and 3rd grader. In addition to the art classes they take at school, we have an art instructor come to our home for a 90-minute class every Thursday afternoon. He’s amazing with kids and exposes them to all sorts of different media. He’s more of the “let their imaginations run wild” school rather than focusing too much on technique (though that will come). Here are some examples of work they’ve done with him:

Johnny (then 8), inspired by Rise of the Planet of the Apes (ink and pastels)
Johnny again, a Chinese dragon (watercolor)
Dinosaurs, by Johnny (also at age 8) โ€” Ink and pastels
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Guenevere, age 10. Ink, crayon, pastel
Robots and flying saucers, Johnny, age 8, mixed media
Dragon, Johnny age 8, pastel and ink
Beijing yesterday and tomorrow (smog-enveloped on the right), done at age 9 by Guenevere
Iron Man, by Johnny at age 7. Crayon and water color
Guenevere at age 8, Chinese New Year in Beijing. Mixed media
