Vatican still trying to finalize provisional deal with Beijing

A historic meeting took place between representatives from China and the Vatican in Munich last Friday. Reuters reportsย that the meeting, which was attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wรกng Yรฌ ็Ž‹ๆฏ… and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, โ€œis believed to be the highest-level official encounter between the two sides in decadesโ€ and was previously considered โ€œunthinkable.โ€

The meeting was initiated and approved by Pope Francis,ย according to the South China Morning Post, who โ€œwas โ€˜eagerโ€™ to use the talks to explore โ€˜renewal or formalizationโ€™ of a provisional deal reached in 2018 to allow the Vatican to appoint bishops pre-approved by Beijing.โ€ That agreement is said to be expiring in August.

Pope Francis was apparently โ€œdelightedโ€ with theย meeting. A Vatican statement also said the two sides โ€œhad agreed to continue โ€˜institutional, bilateral dialogueโ€™ aimed at benefiting both the Catholic Church and the Chinese people.โ€

While the Vatican is the only European sovereign stateย to formally recognize Taipei instead of Beijing, the meeting signals an improved relationship between the two parties since 2018.

In January this year, Taiwanโ€™s president, Tsai Ing-wen (่”ก่‹ฑๆ–‡ Cร i Yฤซngwรฉn), wrote a letterย to Pope Francis describing Chinaโ€™s aggression and persecution of religion as โ€œobstacles to peace,โ€ and detailing the Communist regimeโ€™s โ€œabuses of power.โ€
