Editor’s note for June 6, 2023
A note for Access newsletter readers from Jeremy Goldkorn.

Dear reader:
Elon Musk said China plans to roll out AI regulations following his meetings with top Chinese officials during his two-day charm campaign to Beijing and Shanghai. “I think we had some very productive discussions on artificial intelligence risks, and the need for some oversight and regulation,” said the CEO of Twitter and Tesla. “And my understanding from those conversations is that China will be initiating AI regulation in China.”
Musk is apparently unaware that China has already initiated AI regulations, with draft rules already published in March, and seems to have fallen for the old Beijing trick of bamboozling foreigners with “access” to the inside thinking of the top leadership.
Of course, he is a billionaire who has established arguably the most successful foreign-owned and only wholly foreign-owned car factory in China, so what do I know?
