Clouds clear over Kawagebo in the Meili Snow Mountains

Kawagebo, Yunnan Province’s highest mountain, is holy to Tibetan Buddhists and may be recognizable as the inspiration for the cover art of James Hilton’s novel about Shangri-La, “Lost Horizon.” The sacred peak has never been summited and climbing it is now banned on religious and cultural grounds.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
