Kashgar is an oasis city in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China. Many merchants and traders fill its streets, and its market attracts thousands of people each Sunday. The image is part of Michael Yamashita’s book, “Marco Polo: A Photographer’s Journey,” which retraces a legendary 13th-century journey of the Italian adventurer.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
