The Songzanlin monastery

Towering over the city of Shangri-La in southwest China, the Songzanlin monastery is the most notable buddhist base in the region. The site has seen extensive rebuilding in recent years, and grown in profile as a destination for tourists.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
