Sacred mountain peak

Kawagarbo Peak, the highest mountain in Yunnan Province, is located on the border between Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region. It is one of the most sacred peaks in the Tibetan world, which reveres it as the spiritual home of a warrior god also named Kawagarbo.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
