Rice terraces

The Yuanyang rice terraces are located in the south of Yunnan Province, where they were long ago dug out by the Hani people. The tiered landscape, which is known for its expansive area with shallower slopes, was designated a World Heritage Site by the UN in 2013.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
