Horse-racing festival

Thousands of herdsmen dressed in traditional outfits participate in the Nakchu Horse-Racing Festival, which takes place in northern Tibet each August. The festival, which includes activities such as yak races, tug-of-war, and stone lifting, lasts about 5 to 15 day.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
