Prayer flags on a hill in Sichuan

Thousands of colorful flags fly in the wind on a mountain hill in Lhagang, a small town in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of western Sichuan Province. Tibetans believe that when wind blows the flags, blessings will be disseminated throughout the land.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
