Fishermen on Erhai Lake

In this archive photo from 1989, fishermen from the Bai Minority group start their work at dawn on Erhai Lake in Dali, Yunnan Province. At that time, there was no established tourist industry. Fast forward 29 years, and you can barely see any fishing activity at Erhai Lake, as the scenic spot has been taken over by tourism.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
