At End of the World

In this photo from 1998, a woman poses for photos at End of the World (天涯海角 tiānyá hǎijiǎo), which is at the foot of Maling Mountain in Tianya Town, Sanya, Hainan Province. The location — whose Chinese name is literally translated as “the end of the world” — is named after a romantic legend about a couple who were deeply in love and forced to break up by their families. They fled to this place after being chased by their families and decided to jump into the sea to stay together. Since then, the spot has become a romantic destination that symbolizes eternal love.
