In the 1970s in China, people needed a government-issued coupon to purchase a bicycle. However, as the countryโ€™s economy transformed in the 1980s, factories sprang up to produce bikes. The above photo, from 1982, shows a typical, bike-laden Beijing street in that year. In 1986, more than 33 million bikes were produced in 11 months, according to a report from Phoenix TV.
