The imprisonment of the ‘model villagers’: Two Uyghur sisters on what it means to lose their family and way of life
For the family of sisters Nursiman and Nur’iman, a local work brigade placed a small red plaque with five stars on it to the front gate of their house. The stars stood for “patriotism, honesty, education, hygiene, and harmony.” But in the end, that didn’t stop the sisters’ parents and brother from being sent to jail for reasons that remain murky to this day.

China’s former richest man released from prison, still smiling
After 12 years in prison for insider trading and bribery, entrepreneur Huáng Guāngyù 黄光裕 (aka Wong Kwong-yu) was released on parole on June 25. Formerly China’s richest man, Huang’s electrical appliance retailer GOME saw its stock price surge 17.39% on the day of his release.

Chinese TV cartoon characters censored for ‘dyed’ hair
The complaint that landed the show in trouble was made by an anonymous viewer on May 22. In a note submitted to content regulators in Hunan, the viewer said the series had “problematic” values, and that the main characters set a bad example for kids because they “dyed their hair bright colors,” “wore loud clothes,” and “did costume changes onstage.”

India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
India has escalated its border confrontation with China, two weeks after a deadly clash at the Line of Actual Control. This time, cyberspace borders are at stake: India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) announced today that it would completely ban and disable all access within India to 59 China-based app, including TikTok and WeChat.

Beijing expects zero new COVID-19 cases in about a week
The chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Wú Zūnyǒu 吴尊友, said on Monday that he was optimistic that Beijing would have zero new infections of COVID-19 in roughly a week, as authorities continued to conduct citywide testing and cut chains of local transmission.
