In an effort that has gone unnoticed by most of the world, China’s leadership is pushing to raise the percentage of protected land area to 35% through Ecological Conservation Red Lines (ERLs). This innovation has the potential to make China a leader in global conservation. But of course, there are loopholes, which present challenges to conservationists’ efforts.

China, which has strengthened ties with the Taliban since the fundamentalist group took over the country after the U.S. exit in 2021, has a history of using Huawei technology to racially profile Uyghurs. The Taliban hopes to use the cameras to quell violent opposition from groups such as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) and the National Resistance Front.

Ruth Ingram spoke to Uyghurs in Afghanistan and around the world for the latest Uyghur Bulletin.
