The end of the EAST?
The world’s daily newspaper about China | September 1, 2023
The week that was | ||
Dear reader,
This week, China has seen consumer boycotts of Japanese products, and social media protests after Beijing banned Japanese seafood imports last week in reaction to the Tokyo Electric Power Company releasing treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, Beijing released a new official map with expansive territorial claims that have enraged many neighboring countries. Also in the news, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo went to Beijing for talks on trade that went smoothly but did not result in any breakthroughs, while British Foreign Minister James Cleverly just wrapped up a trip to China. You can find summaries and links to reporting on these stories below. There’s also plenty more news in the web versions of our daily newsletters from August 31, 30, 29, 28. We’re taking Monday, September 4 off for the U.S. Labor Day holiday. We’ll be back in your inboxes on September 5, but will publish news on our website over the long weekend. If you’re not already a subscriber, sign up for our Daily Dispatch, or our free Weekly.
