Dear reader,
Come meet us in New York on November 1 and 2 at our 2023 NEXTChina Conference to answer the question “What does China want?” Tickets and details here. With China on a week-long holiday to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, it’s been a slow news week in the country itself. But there’s been plenty of China-related news from outside China, as we’ve reported in our newsletters this week: October 2: U.S. government plans to end reliance on China for minerals may be stymied by environmentalists who want to block mining on American soil, and China called the U.S. an “empire of lies.” October 3: China’s space agency said it would open a key lunar mission to global cooperation, how to think about the “black box” of Chinese politics, and Beijing’s red carpet welcome for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. October 4: “Whoosh” — Indonesia’s new high-speed railway, which was funded and built mostly by Chinese entities, began operating this week, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine lit a fire under China’s transition to green energy. October 5: China will prolong the operational life and double the size of its Tiangong Space Station, and Chinese video game developer miHoYo has been trying to create its own micropayment system for iPhone users, but its attempts have been swiftly nixed by Apple.
