Stimulus coming, along with patriotic education
...and Xi meets California governor, rottweilers attack, and more | October 25, 2023
Dear reader:
Our Word of the Day is: Patriotic Education Law (็ฑๅฝไธปไนๆ่ฒๆณ ร iguรณ zhวyรฌ jiร oyรน fว).
This new law was passed today by Chinaโs legislature as part of an ongoing campaign to ensure loyalty to the state and crush โhistorical nihilismโ (ๅๅฒ่ๆ ไธปไน lรฌshว xลซwรบ zhวyรฌ), a phrase used in China to describe any public doubt or skepticism about the Chinese Communist Partyโs characterization of historical events.

A brutal dog attack in which an off-leash Rottweiler mauled a two-year-old girl has reignited a debate over dog-walking etiquette and what to do about stray canines in China, with rumors about local governments ordering the mass trapping of unattended dogs.

Los Angeles Chinatown, 1871: The forgotten mass lynching |
Illustration for The China Project by Alex Santafรฉ |
One of the largest episodes of mass lynching in American history took place on October 24โ25, 1871.
At least 18 Chinese men were lynched that night โ 10% of the Chinese population in Los Angeles. What caused this spasm of violence?
This tragic episode is a part of Chinaโs history, just as it is part of American history and Asian-American history, because it shaped Chinaโs impressions of and attitude toward the West, James Carter writes. There were profound implications for both sides of the relationship. ย |
