...anti-Japanese sentiment in China | August 30, 2023
Dear reader:
The last time there were serious anti-Japanese demonstrations and boycotts in China was in 2012 when the Japanese government purchased three of the disputed Senkaku or Diaoyu islands from their private owner. The uninhabited islands have been under Japanese control since 1895, but are claimed by China. Now there is a new wave of anti-Japanese sentiment, caused by the decision of the Tokyo Electric Power Company to release treated radioactive waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. As with the 2012 demonstrations, Beijingโs rhetoric about Japan is fueling popular anger off- and online. The government has banned Japanese seafood imports, and citizens are boycotting other Japanese products and harassing companies that are Japanese, or perceived to be so. So this week at least, many people will not really be thinking about the gloomy state of the economy. Our Word of the Day is a top trending phrase today on Chinese social media platform Weibo:

Japan urged China on Tuesday to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens, confirming media reports that a brick was thrown at its embassy in Beijing amid an escalating row over the Fukushima wastewater release.
Anti-Japanese sentiment has been high in China since Tokyo began releasing treated nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, prompting Beijing to introduce an immediate ban on Japanese seafood imports.

India lodged a โstrong protestโ with China over a new map that lays claim to territory around their disputed border, which New Delhi says falls under its jurisdiction. The โstandard map,โ released by Chinaโs Ministry of Natural Resources on August 28, shows the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and the disputed Aksai Chin plateau as part of Chinaโs territory. โWe reject these claims as they have no basis. Such steps by the Chinese side only complicate the resolution of the boundary question,โ Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said yesterday. Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit China for his first foreign trip since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest on alleged war crimes in March. He plans to attend the Belt and Road Forum in October. Putin was last in China in February 2022 for the Winter Olympic Games. Ahead of his visit, Cleverly defended his talks with China against criticisms from members of the British government, particularly among Conservatives who have pushed for a tougher stance on Beijing. โWe are clear-eyed about the areas where we have fundamental disagreements with China and we raise those issues when we meet,โ Cleverly said. โBut I think itโs important to also recognise that we have to have a pragmatic, sensible working relationship with China because of the issues that affect us all around the globe.โ Five people have been detained for allegedly underreporting the number of deaths from a flash flood at a highway construction site in Sichuan Province last week triggered by heavy rain, Chinese state media reported today. The Treaty of Nerchinsk established a border between Manchu China and Romanov Russia. It was negotiated in a remote region between two sides that distrusted each other and that had deeply different conceptions of both diplomacy and politics, but it somehow withstood the test of time.
The Nerchinsk treaty was far from perfect, but in todayโs era of deep distrust between many states, perhaps it provides a lesson, writes James Carter. |
