A river divide
The Mekong runs through a canyon between rice paddies and uncultivated slopes in Lanping in Yunnan Province. Known in Mandarin as the Lancang Jiang, or “turbulent river,” its waters run white for the first 1,000 miles from its origin on the Tibetan plateau.
