In this photo from 1998, construction materials are brought to a worksite along the Grand Canal in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The Grand Canal is the world’s longest artificial river, and serves as a vital transportation route connecting Beijing to Hangzhou.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
