Dragon dancers

Performers in the town of Meilin in the southeastern province of Fujian put on a dragon dance for a festival celebrating Mazu, a sea goddess from Chinese mythology. Their stage is the courtyard of a tulou, a traditional communal home that is inhabited by the local Hakka people.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
