Hotan, an oasis town in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, is positioned at the southwestern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. It was a strategic location along the southern Silk Road and home to people of many different ethnicities and varied traditions including falconry, a sport popular during the time of Marco Polo.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
