Fishermen at the end of the Great Wall

At the Great Wall’s eastern edge in Hebei Province, it meets the Bohai Sea in a spot known as Old Dragon’s Head, part of the Shanhaiguan section of the ancient construct. Rubble from the submerged portion acts as a reef, drawing shellfish along with those who would catch them.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
