Fortress on the Great Wall
The Jiayuguan Fortress was built at the western edge of the Great Wall during the early Ming dynasty to protect the narrow pass into the Hexi Corridor, part of the ancient Silk Road trade route. It also marked the symbolic end of Chinese civilization, the point at which exiles in imperial China were banished into the Gobi Desert.
