A small but strong Catholic community worships in Cizhong, Yunnan Province, near Tibet. Missionaries who came to this village over a century ago spread the Gospel in the Tibetan language and built this building, which was remarkably spared from the destruction of the Cultural Revolution.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
