The Grand Canal at sunset

Light from the setting sun paints a portion of the Grand Canal in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The canal, the world’s longest manmade waterway, stretches for more than 1,000 miles from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. It was constructed to help transport grain and other goods around the country, and parts of it date back to the 5th century BCE.
