Home in the wall
Wang Yulian and his wife, Wang Youshen, inhabit a sturdy but poorly ventilated “house cave” (yaodong) built directly into the Great Wall in Laoying, Shanxi Province. An estimated 30 million Chinese reside in similar cave dwellings, many of them dug into the cliffs of northern China’s Loess Plateau.
