Though its name translates as “black lake,” the Karakul has waters that vary in shades of blue and green from dark to light. It is the highest lake on the Pamir Plateau in Xinjiang and is ringed by the snowcapped mountains of the Tian Shan, Kunlun and Pamir ranges.
