A heavy rain falls inside the courtyard of a large tulou residence in Yun Shui Yao village in Fujian Province. These circular rammed-earth traditional homes of the Hakka people are unique to this part of eastern China and draw visitors from around the country and overseas.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
