The Tianzishan cable car travels through the jagged rock formations of the Zhangjiajie National Park in the Wulingyuan scenic and historic area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hunan Province. The roughly 3,000 sandstone pillars and peaks that dot the preserve served as the inspiration for the landscape of Pandora in James Cameron’s “Avatar.”

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
