Park rangers toss live chickens to the lions at feeding time in the shadow of a section of the Great Wall near Beijing that is popular with tourists. Visitors to the wildlife park are allowed to drive their own cars through the animal enclosures, but must take care to stay in the vehicles.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
