The Potala Palace in Lhasa
The Potala Palace, resting atop the Red Mountain in Tibet’s capital, was once the seat of the region’s government and residence of the Dalia Lama until he fled to India in 1959. It reaches an altitude of 12,140 feet in the center of the Lhasa River valley and contains more than 1,000 rooms, hundreds of murals and nearly 10,000 painted scrolls.
