Preparing for the role
Beijing opera is a traditional form of theatre developed during the middle of the Qing dynasty (1644โ1912). It is most recognizable from the distinctive styles of makeup worn by each actor to represent different roles, such as a dignified older man, a lively young woman, a crafty conspirator, or a clown. Countless variations exist, and each performance is infused with music, vocal performance, dance, and acrobatics.
