Inside a circular apartment complex built by China Vanke, the country’s largest property developer, in 2008 to house low-income migrant workers in the Foshan district of Guangzhou. The design of the structure was inspired by the communal round houses, known as tulou, traditionally inhabited by the Hakka people in Fujian Province.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
