Worshippers gather at the entrance to the main temple of Labrang Monastery in Xiahe County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province. The monastery, which was founded in 1709, houses the largest number of monks outside of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning photographer who has been shooting for National Geographic magazine for more than 30 years. He specialized in Asia after spending seven years in the region following his graduation from Wesleyan University.
