Water Calligraphy

Part of the 2018 The China Project photo contest.

Taken in May at Xiangyang Park 襄阳公园 in Shanghai. Parks are always nice to visit. From taichi to dancing seniors and people playing board games or practicing with instruments, there is always something interesting going on.

Water calligraphy is one of my favorite things to watch, as I like the patience and artistry the practitioners put in for a temporary piece.

I like the way different generations mix in this snapshot: the girl watching the older man doing calligraphy, as well as him looking at a smartphone for his poems.

Patrick Firmansyah is a director, photographer, and visual effects artist. He works with clients all over the world and is especially interested in documentary-style work. He likes to explore different perspectives on life and capture the extraordinary in the mundane.
