Why we care
There is no global challenge or opportunity defining the next phase of human civilization that can be fully addressed without considering China. And yet, few individuals around the world have truly invested time to understand Chinaโs past, present, and future โ and how it impacts decision making today.
To make matters worse, the amount of information and independent thought dedicated to China continues to dwindle as, domestically in China, the current regime has tightened its control over the media industry, and internationally, global media outlets have consolidated and vastly shrunk their budgets for foreign reporting.
The status quo sources of information, perspective, and analysis on China are insufficient for the time period we are entering.
The China Project exists to make that information, perspective and analysis available.
We are a fully independent, for-profit platform based in New York City.
Our team is comprised of individuals who have lived significant portions of their lives both in China and abroad, who can thus bring deep understanding of local context alongside a global perspective.
We are neither pro- or anti-China. For that matter, we are not pro-or anti- any country.
We want to showcase as full and nuanced a picture as possible, so that you can come to your own decisions on topics from censorship to climate change.
Who is The China Project for?
Our content is for anyone who wants to understand the full story of China, beyond just the headlines.
Readers and subscribers of The China Project include business professionals, diplomats and government employees, researchers, academics, and other decision-makers from Beijing to New York to Helsinki.
But we are also read by young people in cities around the world โ from Chinese diaspora communities in America to young people in the Global South for whom China plays an outsized role in their economic and security future.
How are we funded?
We are funded, first and foremost, by our paying subscribers, and have also raised private social impact and venture capital funds over the years.
More recently, we have undergone an equity crowdfunding campaign under the SECโs Reg CF fundraising rules, which allows us to raise private investment funds directly from the public โ including many audience members. At this point, our stakeholders, investors, and subscribers span the globe.
We receive no financial support or influence from any individual or organization affiliated with any government, although we are proud to count numerous government employees and offices from many countries around the world as paying subscribers of our content.
