No results on North Korea at U.S.-China security dialogue – China’s latest political and current affairs news

On June 21, senior U.S. and Chinese officials gathered in Washington for the first session of the Diplomatic and Security Dialogue proposed by Trump and Xi during the presidential summit at Trump’s members-only golf resort in Florida in April. Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi 杨洁篪, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and Defense Secretary James Mattis attended the meeting.

• Chinese state media Xinhua reported that China reiterated its commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, as well as its opposition to the deployment of the U.S. Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile defense system in South Korea.
• In a press conference following the meeting, Tillerson said that Trump “looks forward to his state visit to China,” without specifying the exact time of the trip.
• The talks were held a day after Trump tweeted that while he appreciated China’s efforts in relation to North Korea, it “has not worked out.”
• China hit back on Wednesday, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang saying in a press conference that “China has always made [a] relentless effort for the settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue,” and that China has played “an important and constructive role.”
